what we do

YWCA London East

woman wearing a burkhaYWCA London East is based at a custom-built centre in the borough of Barking and Dagenham. We welcome all girls and young women into our safe, non-judgemental environment.

We also work at community centres, youth clubs and schools throughout the borough; anywhere we are needed. This approach makes us extremely flexible, and means we meet some of the girls who are most in need of our services.

We offer:

  • Group sessions where young women can work on personal development; anger management and coping with stress; healthy living; sexual health and relationships; and learn about alcohol and drugs.
  • Confidential one-to-one sessions with our youth workers to help girls deal with specific problems.
  • Information about education, skills, training and jobs. Many girls find the transition between primary and secondary school, college, training or the outside world extremely difficult, and without support may be at risk of dropping out.
  • Courses specifically for young mums and pregnant teenagers. We teach parenting skills and offer support, information and the chance to get their work accredited.

We encourage young women to take part in workshops and discussions; to be creative and to speak up and have their say.

By working together on community projects, campaigning and having fun, new friendships are forged which can restore self-esteem and hope for the future.
