What we do
our work with girls and women
YWCA Nottingham
Nottingham is the most deprived area in the East Midlands. The city has below average school results and one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the country.
YWCA Nottingham helps young women overcome these and other challenges and works to raise aspirations and self-esteem. We support the city's agenda for positive change through early intervention.
All our services are provided directly in the communities we serve: at schools, children’s centres or projects. This ‘outreach’ approach makes us extremely flexible; we can work with girls who are often the hardest to reach and who most need us.
We offer:
- Personal development and life skills programmes. In small groups we deliver informal sessions on topics such as healthy relationships, staying safe, sexual health, money management and future education and work options.
- Education opportunities that often lead to accreditation through the Open College Network.
- Courses specifically for young mums and pregnant teenagers. We teach parenting skills and offer support, information and the chance to get their work accredited.
- Creative, therapeutic ‘drop-in’ sessions for sex workers which run alongside their drug treatment clinic at a local prostitute outreach project.
We have fun and build confidence using a wide range of activities including creative media such as art and dance.

their stories

Charmaine was struggling to survive on her low income and turned to fraud. "I don’t know what I was thinking. It never crossed my mind that I would get caught."
we think

...learning about alcohol should be induced in the PHSE curriculum. It will help young women understand that alcohol is addictive and dangerous
