what we do

YWCA St Helens

girl on mobileYWCA St Helens is in a deprived area with high rates of unemployment, truancy, teenage pregnancy and anti-social behaviour.

We help young women to take control of their lives and get involved in developing a better local environment.

We run programmes for young women who may have dropped out of school or who have low aspirations; have been bullied or abused; are isolated or unemployed; young mums and mums-to-be; and those who may be using alcohol or drugs.

We offer:

  • Counselling through our In Partnership Project (IPP). We help young women decide for themselves how to tackle the problems they face.
  • Accredited informal education programmes. In a relaxed atmosphere young women learn literacy, numeracy, computer training, anger management and useful life skills.
  • Information and support about education, training, skills and jobs.
  • Evening 'drop-in' sessions. We plan these according to what the young women tell us they need.
  • Outdoor activities, sleepovers, drama projects, volunteering and campaigning.

Some of the young women who regularly come to YWCA St Helens have worked with a credit union to encourage young people to manage their money, attended national participation events and one young woman met MPs to talk about her experience of school.
