what we do

YWCA West Kent

young womanYWCA West Kent welcomes all girls and women to its centre in Tonbridge. We work with them to build their self-esteem and encourage them to try new things, speak up, make decisions and share their opinions.

We deliver programmes for young women who may have dropped out of school or have low aspirations; who have been bullied or abused; who are isolated or unemployed; who are young mums and mums-to-be; and those who may be using alcohol and drugs.

We offer:

  • Informal education programmes. In relaxed group sessions we teach literacy, numeracy, computer training and life skills.
  • Courses specifically for young mums and pregnant teenagers. We teach parenting skills and offer support, information and the chance to get their work accredited.
  • Sexual health sessions offering advice, condoms and pregnancy and chlamydia testing.

We have fun and build confidence using creative media, such as film-making, art and dance.

Young women who attend YWCA West Kent have made films about homelessness and healthy eating and made speeches to MPs and policy makers at Westminster.
